VE Day 70th Anniversary – Hosted by Centurion Signs
Our Managing Director, Glen Ballantyne, has arranged a celebratory event to honour the VE Day 70th Anniversary, one of the most momentous days in Great Britain’s history. This event will raise money for veteran’ charity Erskine and will take place on 8th May in Maccabi Hall in Giffnock.
Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) was on May 8th 1945, and was the official announcement of the end of World War II in Europe. It was on this day that the famous photographs were taken of the thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace shouting “We want the King”, before any official announcement had been made.
At 15.00 on the 8th, after lunch with George VI, Churchill announced to the people of Britain:
“May we allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing. Advance Britannia. Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!”
VE Day 70th Anniversary Celebrations
Glen said about the event:
“It is such an important and significant day in the history of our country, and as there are so few official events to mark the VE Day 70th Anniversary I felt it important to personally begin making arrangements within Glasgow.”
“Many of my generation’s parents either served in the forces or lived through World War II, so have been brought up understanding the sacrifices that were made. I therefore feel it is an important anniversary to celebrate.”
As a regular donor and supporter of Erskine, Glen has decided that all proceeds from the event shall be donated to the veterans’ charity, as they have been caring for Scotland’s veterans since 1916. It is our hope that this is the start of a long and lasting relationship between Centurion Signs and Erskine.
Our sign making facilities here at the Centurion Signs factory will also be heavily utilised for this event. We will be creating some very interesting signage, wall graphics and other decorations that will reconstruct the feeling of being back to that very night 70 years ago! We shall be providing more details, and sneak peeks, of these over the coming months before the big night.
On the night we will have the Swing Sensations’ big band sound, guest speakers, a three-course meal, and a veterans table of honour. So if you know any veterans, locally or further afield, that are fit enough and would like to attend to please contact Glen on email@example.com.
We extend this invite to not only service men and women, but all contributors to the war effort; Land Army, Royal Ordinance factory workers etc.
